A Labor Of Love Bible Study Prepared by Pastor C. E. Hawthorne
Scripture Text: Numbers 24:1-5 AMP

INTRODUCTION

It’s amazing what God can do when we set ourselves to seek Him, especially when we simply seek His face or seek to be in His presence.  He opens our eyes and enables us to see the things that He has for us.  In Numbers 24:1 we learn that the prophet Balaam had his own personal, eye-opening experience with God.  He saw that it pleased God to bless Israel.

This is the exact opposite of what Balak wanted done.  Balak was looking for a way to curse Israel.  He was so desperate that he was willing to hire or pay Balaam to do it.  Although Balaam struggled to resist Balak and his tempting offers, he finally got his eyes looking in the right direction and saw clearly the purposes and will of God for Israel, which was to bless them, not curse them.

This is why Jesus came to earth – to bless people, not curse them (Acts 3:26).  If you really want to be blessed, bless somebody else.  Be a blessing to the people God puts in your life.  Be a blessing to your family and friends.  Be a blessing to people on your job.  Be a blessing to your pastor and fellow church members.

God’s purpose and plan for your life is to make you a blessing.  He has blessed you to be a blessing.  Start thinking about ways you can bless other people and you will see a multitude of blessings coming right back to you.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Read Psalms 34:10 and Matthew 6:33.  What do we learn from these scriptures about seeking the Lord?
  2. What does God promise in Deuteronomy 28:2-6?
  3. It is in the New Testament that we really learn about Balaam’s intention to get paid for cursing Israel.  What does 2Peter 2:15 and Jude 11say about him?  Was he really in the ministry for the money?
  4. What did Jesus do to make sure that the blessings of Abraham would come on us (non-Jewish people)?  See Galatians 3:13-14.
  5. How did Aaron bless the children of Israel according to Numbers 6:23-26?
  6. Do believers today actually have the ability to speak blessings over other people (Luke 6:28; Jas. 3:8-10)?
